THE OSCARS: The Day After

Now that I have had a day to think about it, I think I’m actually more bitter than before that Avatar didn’t win Best Picture. And here is why. It’s the same concept I was talking about before about Best Costume Design. It doesn’t matter how good the costuming was in a contemporary movie, if your film was set in Victorian England or something, you’re going to win whether you actually deserve it or not. It’s just a fact. It is sort of the same thing with Best Picture and Best Director. Kathyn Bigelow was a woman, and no woman had ever won Best Director, so she got it. It’s all political and that is crazy. It’s movies for crying out loud. The best one wins. Not the one you think will make you seem more socially aware or whatever, but the best one. And the best one was Avatar – but it was more anti-government and pro-environment and The Hurt Locker was patriotism all the way. So of course it won. I could almost understand if Avatar was a misunderstood movie and the amazingness hadn’t yet been discovered – but it has been and the reviews of it are all very positive. So why did it get screwed? Because James Cameron has basically unlimited resources and apparently the Academy wants to celebrate a film that cost less money and was worse. You would think that Hollywood would want the greatest and most awesome film to win, no matter how much money was available. But no, they want to pretend they’re noble and want the little guy to survive even though not a single one of them knows what it’s actually like to be the little guy and all that should matter is the film. And let’s be honest. For real, The Hurt Locker wasn’t that good. And it’s insane. And I will never ever stop being angry about this. Ever. For the rest of time.
