Up

I usually love animated movies, especially when the animation is Pixar – they are geniuses. However, Up was a little different than the usual animated film, but not in a good way. The story is about an older man whose wife died (I cried) and he wanted to fulfill her lifelong dream of going to South America – so he uses balloons to transport his house there, but a young boyscout tags along. And then it got weird.

Talking dogs and dogs that can fly airplanes. Weird. A maniacal former explorer who hunts a ostrich-like bird and then gets killed by his own greediness. Weird. I cried a second time when the old man found his wife’s photographs of them over the years.
It seems like Up is poised to win the Globe and probably the Oscar for Best Animated Film. I don’t think it should. It was good, and the animation was cutting edge for sure, but Coraline was amazing. It was different in a really great way, you connected with the characters, it was scary but cool and awesome. So… whatever. I’m just saying. You should still watch it – it’s good and all, but we’re talking weird. For serious. If it’s between seeing Up and Coraline, see Coraline. Trust me.
