The Kids Are All Right
This movie was hyped like crazy as one of the best movies this past year and how everyone in it was going to be nominated. I should have known that it would be pretty boring, but of course, I didn't. The story is about lesbian couple Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) raising two kids, the girl from Alice in Wonderland and the boy from Journey to the Center of the Earth. They find their sperm donor, Mark Ruffalo, and chaos ensues. Nic is super threatened and Jules ends up sleeping with him. The movie ends when their daughter leaves for college.
First of all, I thought Annette Bening was great, but then again, I always think she's great, so that's nothing new. The story definitely dragged a bit, but there were parts that were funny and interesting, like when Jules told her to watch her drinking because it's day time and Nic said same thing with the micromanaging. Funny. I didn't really like the whole "we live in California and are super hip and love the environment and wish we were old enough to be actual hippies" thing, but I think that was part of the point they were making - that Jules and Mark Ruffalo were more alike than Jules and Nic were, but ultimately it didn't matter. I loved/hated the scene when Nic found out that Jules was cheating with Mark Ruffalo - it was depressing and sad but it was shot really well and it was very believable.
Overall, I liked this movie fine. I didn't think it was the second coming or anything, but then again that's what I said about The Hurt Locker and apparently everyone else in the world thought it was the greatest thing they'd ever seen. So I guess I have no idea what I'm talking about. The Kids Are All Right is nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, which I'm sure it will win, because the good movies this year were dramas - although I'm pretty sure this was an indie drama, but whatever. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore are both nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and if it's one of them it should be Annette Bening for real. Like I said, Emma Stone is probably not going to win for Easy A, even though that movie rocked. It's also up for Best Screenplay, but I'm obviously pulling for The Social Network because Aaron Sorkin rocks my world. So we shall see. I'm banking on it for Best Comedy and Annete Bening for Best Actress. The Golden Globes should be interesting this year.
