I Heart Books
I love being in school because school makes me want to read. I know that might sound a little weird, but it’s true! When we’re on break, I don’t do much but watch TV and play around on the Internet – but once the quarter starts, I’m motivated to read a lot more. Since the beginning of this year, I’ve read 16 books, and I plan to read several more. And the best part is that they aren’t just lame chick lit books like I usually read… I’ve really started stepping out of my reading comfort zone and I’ve realized there are a lot of great writers out there… some of them suck, but there are a lot of good ones. Normally, I never would have picked up Then We Come to the End, but it was surprisingly fantastic.
Of course, once I’d hammered my way through all the new books they carry at the Wright State bookstore (except the memoirs of one Barack Obama, which I’m sure would make me scream), I had to go to Barnes & Noble to find books. Unfortunately, I think it’s B&N that gets me to buy the brightly colored chick lit books. Honestly, there’s almost TOO MUCH to choose from, and I found myself relying on my old faithful tactics of book choosing – good title, good font, good opening paragraph, brightly colored. Shame on Jennifer. However, for years now (yes, years) I’ve been avoiding the series by Sophie Kinsella (Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic and Sister, Shopaholic takes Manhattan, etc etc) because they’re set in London and I knew if I read the first one I would be compelled to finish the series. However, I have a longer attention span than I used to, and I prefer reading series these days (i.e. Greg Rucka, Ted Dekker)… so I bought the first three and read the first one… yesterday. I wanted to make these books last but it’s not going to happen. They are way too good and funny.
I like books. And I haven’t been too interested in movies lately either, which, if you know me, is pretty strange. I even packed up a bunch of movies and took them with me to Oklahoma to see if Karolyn wanted any of them – and I haven’t really even noticed they’re gone. Weird weird weird. However, while that collection is shrinking, my TV on DVD collection is growing exponentially. I’m on Frasier now, which has 11 seasons, and I have the first five (hint hint lol) already. Ryan and I were talking about how amazing it is that Frasier was even popular at all, let alone for 11 years. Good times. I love TV!!! But even the stuff that’s on every night is starting to get a little dull. I actually fast-forwarded through most of American Idol and even some of Hell’s Kitchen… and I read through 3/4 of Big Brother. It’s just not holding my attention like it used to.
In other news, I’m MOVING!!!!! Woo!!!!! I’m moving next door to my parents!! Hooray!! And I just bought an elliptical machine to go in my brand new gorgeous house and I am very excited. The problem is, we don’t have a lot of time when we aren’t at work or school, so it makes moving a bit difficult. I’ve moved… a bookshelf. And my keyboard. That’s all that is in the new house. We are funny. But I have high hopes for this weekend… Maybe. Lol.
