MTV Movie Award Nominations

I always watch the MTV award shows, including the movie one, because it’s usually fun and most of the celebrities show up to accept them. The categories this year are pretty funny, and I decided to cast my votes this morning. I haven’t seen a lot of the films that are nominated (like Jennifer’s Body and The Bounty Hunter), but it’s still fun to vote anyway. Here are the categories and who I voted for, regardless of who will win. Some awards shows are fun because you can predict the winners, like at the Oscars and the Golden Globes, but I like the MTV awards because it’s just for fun. So here goes…

Best Kiss – I only saw a few of the nominees, and am voting for Valentine’s Day, whether it’s the Taylors or Jennifer Garner/Ashton Kutcher. That movie was adorable. I’m thinking it will go to one of them, or maybe to the lesbian kiss in The Runaways, because, you know.

Best Fight – Any of the Star Trek ones would be great, as would the fight in Obsessed between Ali Larter and Beyonce. But I have to go for the final fight in Avatar when the lead guy is an Avatar and he’s fighting the military guy in the giant robot. That was freaking sweet. But I also want to say that the fight in 17 Again was pretty hilarious. But yeah, Avatar.

Best Villain – Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds. If anything else wins it’s a travesty, and we all know it. He was a genius. Of course, people might not vote for him because he already won the Globe and the Oscar. So… the guy from Avatar? Whatever, it should be Waltz.

Best WTF Moment – This is just a funny category. But I have seriously only seen like two of the thrity some films nominated on the website – and I can’t choose. Though if Johnny Depp really break dances at the end of Alice in Wonderland, that seems like the winner to me. Stupid Tim Burton ruins everything.

Best Ass Kicking Star – Rain is nominated for Ninja Assassin and that makes me happy. Or maybe the guy from Avatar? This is less fun than I thought it would be because each category has a ton of options. It’s like the Best Picture category – bananas.

Best Scared-As-Shit Performance – I don’t do scary movies in general, so I definitely only saw a few of these. But my vote would be for Paranormal Activity because that was crazy. Or maybe Drag Me To Hell because that girl was scared shitless for the entire movie.

Best Female Breakout Star – Carey Mulligan in An Education makes sense. But Emilie de Ravin should not be nominated because she sucks and she’s been on LOST since 2004.

Best Male Breakout Star – It’s got to be Chris Pine for Star Trek, and I can’t believe Joseph Gordon-Lewitt is on there – he’s been on TV since he was like ten.

Best Female Performance – Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side and if not that, then Zoe Saldena for Avatar. Just for fun, though, Beyonce in Obsessed would be fun.

Best Male Performance – Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart, but if not him, Taylor Lautner in New Moon, and my last vote goes to Zac Efron in 17 Again because he is adorable and we all know it.

Best Comedic Performance - Because I didn’t think any of the nominees were particularly funny, I will once again choose Zac Efron. He is funny.

Global Superstar – Who cares? But it should be someone young like Taylor Lautner.

Best Movie – Avatar. I am tired of it NOT winning and getting snubbed.

 When You  was published, it was like nothing I had ever read before, or since, for that matter. I was in the head of Joe Goldberg, an obsessive murdering stalker who made you root for him. And it was amazing. So amazing, that Netflix optioned it and made it into a series, which is equally amazing even if it doesn't follow the book plot the way all of us book nerds would like. The Every [by Dave Eggers]

You would think since I’m so obsessed with The Circle that I would immediately know when Dave Eggers wrote a sequel. I blame my eight month old baby for not knowing when anything new comes out. Of course, I devoured this book as soon as I got it. Unfortunately, this one just went too far. There are cute references to Amazon and how they made a movie and it was terrible, but overall it was a bit of a mess. It’s unrealistic that Mae Holland would be the CEO. Sure, she is the reason Ty didn’t destroy everything, but I didn’t like that she was in the book at all. It’s like when a TV reboot references the old show too much, it comes across a bit pathetic. Like if you don’t have any more ideas, don’t write a second book.  To be fair, the reason I love The Circle is because it sounds great - I love tech and the book teetered in the edge of plausible spookiness in a way that was obliterated in The Every , with the weird clothes and the general mania and WHY was Francis back? Klara and the Sun (by Kazuo Ishiguro)

Because I read so much, not every book is a home run. Some are tedious and others are predictable, equally devastating sins for fiction. Sometimes I choose the wrong books and don't challenge myself to read something different. Even more disappointing, I sometimes judge books by their titles and covers and think they're something else without reading the description. Shame on me. My husband and I celebrate Jolabokaflod, an Icelandic tradition where you gift each other books on Christmas Eve, get in your pajamas, eat chocolate, and read. This past Christmas we had a 3-month-old baby at home and I didn't have time to choose books and my husband chose carefully from high-rated lists on Amazon, and he chose Klara and the Sun  for me, and I am forever thankful. It is rare to read a book that sticks with you and noodles around in your brain months later, and I believe that is the mark of successful fiction.
