Divergent
I just finished the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, and I absolutely loved it. So okay. Basically it's like The Hunger Games, with an interesting twist. It's a post-war culture where everyone has decided that the old methodologies about war and life are all messed up, but there are different groups that think there was something different wrong with life. As a result, people are separated into factions according to this belief: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite.
The Candor value honesty, and think the world went awry because people lied too much. They speak their mind constantly and are always honest.
The Abnegation value selflessness, and think the world went awry because people were too selfish. They do community service and do not do anything remotely self-indulgent. They are also most of the leaders because they are selfless.
The Dauntless value bravery, and think the world went awry because people were too cowardly. They serve as the protectors of the world and also are somewhat of adrenaline junkies.
The Amity value peace, and think the world went awry because of too much conflict and fighting. They are happy and nice, loving and free.
The Erudite value intelligence, and think the world went awry because of ignorance. They are teachers and researchers, and focus on logical problem solving.
Now, in the book, the factions have gone a little off-track over time - like the Dauntless are crazy and almost have a death wish - the Erudite become power hungry because they think everyone else is too stupid to be in control of anything, etc. But it got me thinking, for fun, about what faction I would be in. I think Ryan would be in Abnegation... maybe... And my mom would definitely by Amity. I don't know about my dad - maybe Candor for him. I would not be in Candor because I don't really value honesty that much. Not Amity because I am largely cynical and pessimisstic, although I do like to speak my mind. Definitely DEFINITELY not Abnegation. So that leaves Dauntless and Erudite. I'm thinking Erudite. Although I would like to think I was Dauntless, if it came down to it, I would not pass the tests as a Dauntless. Like, one of the aptitude tests to determine what faction you would be in is that there's a crazy mean dog coming at you all snarly and you have to choose a block of cheese/food or a knife. I would think I would pick the knife, but I probably wouldn't. I would run like a little girl. :) So not Dauntless. I guess that leaves Erudite for me. Fun. In the book, the main character is "Divergent," which means that she doesn't fit into any of the specific categories - this is obviously something she has to hide because it threatens the fabric of their society. I would be mildly Divergent, but probably Erudite. Either way, it's fun to think about. I am excited for the next book in the trilogy!
