So You Think You Can Dance?
This show is great, because I love dancing. The problem is, I'm not a huge fan of contemporary dance, or at least the contemporary dance that gets featured on the show. It's way too much like boring dance recitals from my high school and I find it boring. Isn't it possible to have contemporary dance to some upbeat music? It's like the winter olympics with figure skating. They always do the fun and fast song with the short program but the long program is always something slow and crazy boring. Like that one guy's JFK thing - who was that? Somebody Wyle or something.
Anyway, it's all about contemporary, and I guess it's awesome or whatever, but then they add all the broadway dancing in there and it's like what the hell? It's not that much fun to watch and it isn't that impressive to watch when it's only two people - and the hip hop routines and just getting worse and worse, thanks to stupid Tabitha and Napoleon, who are totally hit or miss. I mean seriously, it's either great or awful, and they seem to have no idea when it's bad. Still, it's a good show, but it always seems like the contemporary dancers win (except Benji), which makes sense. But it's almost like why give a ballroom dancer a chance? They don't make it very far anyway and when they have to dance for their lives it's always disappointing because it's only like half of a dance. Lame.
Plus, it seems like this season all (or at least most) of the dancers are... weird looking. Only a few are particularly attractive, and most look scary or creepy. That's just bad casting. This is still television, after all. We still have to watch them every week. I know it sounds shallow, but it's totally true. If they look scary, nobody wants to vote for them. On the other hand, if they're all weird looking, it evens the playing field and they're all back to square one. But if you think their looks and their outfits from week to week aren't important, then you are stupid. Because it matters. And if you think it shouldn't matter, then you shouldn't really be watching reality tv in the first place. So there.

Yes, most of what you said is true. But, looks can be deceiving. As the season progresses I believe the dancers get schooled in everything, to include their appearance. Clay Aiken comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that can't be disputed is their dancing ability. This season there aren't any iffy dancers, none. Especially the females, they're fierce! They appear to be able to do anything.
The males, on the other hand, are sketchy. They can adapt to different styles but not to the degree the females can. Many of them lack formal training which seems to be necessary this season.
Now, how the judges rate the dancers is subjective. What is their criteria? Progress? Adaptability? Execution? Number of votes?
Only time will tell...
