Grumble, grumble, grumble.
I'm kind of over music. And movies. And television. None of it is any good at the moment. All you have to do is look at the Grammy performances this year to see that current popular music is just plain horrible and hard to listen to. I mean, I like some of it, of course, but Muse sucks and so does Arcade Fire and Justin Beiber and Usher and Miranda Lambert and even Lady Gaga sucks now. The best part was when Jaden Smith rapped, and it wasn't even good. And why is it okay that Lady Gaga blatantly ripped off Madonna's "Express Yourself"? Why is that okay? Why was it okay when Christina Aguilera ripped off the video? Music is just plain disappointing lately, so I listen to the 90's station on satellite radio.
Television is even worse. Awful reality shows like The Bachelor are still on, who knows why, and you still have awful shows like SVU with stupid Mariska Hargitay, who is just plain awful. And shows like CSI: Miami and the new Criminal Minds and stupid new shows with Jennifer Beals as a chief of police? Ridiculous. And for crying out loud, Desperate Housewives is STILL ON. Who is watching this show? It's like the people who watched Scrubs and Two and a Half Men - somehow these shows got great ratings but I've never met anyone who has ever watched them. So I watch Survivor still and I watch old episodes of 24 and LOST and The West Wing and remember what it was like when television was good.
Movies are the same - look at the Oscar nominees this year - I don't even want to watch these movies. The good ones are only marginally better than the bad ones, and none of them hold a candle to some of the past winners. I read an article yesterday saying that 2011 is going to break records for the most sequels released and the most movies that are the fifth in the series. That's insane. And it's not like they're good, you know? I wouldn't care if the movies were good, but a fifth Final Destination? Really? I don't even know why they made a fourth one... or a third, for that matter. And Fast and the Furious 5? I want to see it because I love those movies, but they are just plain terrible. TERRIBLE.
Anyway, I am disillusioned with popular culture at the moment. So I have been reading a lot lately and watching a lot of The West Wing and 24 and finding new shows that I never watched before like 3rd Rock from the Sun and stuff like that. Speaking of books, The Lost Symbol was great (until the end) and I just finished a book today called Gideon's War, written by one of the executive producers of 24. It was a really fast read, but it was like reading an episode of that show, and that's always fun. One day, music, tv and movies will get better. These things come in waves, I know that. But if you were wondering why I haven't been blogging, that's why. It's like it doesn't even matter. Why can't there be a show that was as good as The Golden Girls or All in the Family? Is it because the network execs are too busy making another spin-off of CSI? Because I think we can all agree that it's a little played out. Ugh. And they should really stop remaking shows like V and Hawaii-5-0, because nobody cares. Of course people are watching it, there's nothing else on! Give me something I can get excited about besides Modern Family. And please, please, please someone start a petition and get Glee off the air because that show is ruining television.
