No Oscar for Heath Ledger

Yesterday, I saw the new batman movie, The Dark Knight. First off, I don’t like the title – I think all the batman movies should start with Batman, but whatever. As I can’t stand everyone talking about how Heath Ledger should win an Oscar because he’s dead, I was expecting the worst. I was also the only person on the planet who hated Batman Begins, and I don’t think Christian Bale makes a very good Batman. I swear, the first half of Batman Begins is like The Last Samurai. Weird.

Anyway, so I had low expectations. Very low. But you know what? It was really really good. There were only a few moments that were boring, and I really enjoyed the film. Heath Ledger, in my opinion, did a fantastic job as the Joker. I love when you can’t tell who the actor is, and that’s what this was like. True, he didn’t do much acting, relying instead on a weird voice, makeup, and creepy facial ticks, but who cares? It was believable and I loved it. However, let me make myself clear. Heath Ledger should not win nor be nominated for an Oscar. No he should not. Giving actors awards after they’re dead is just mean, and to be honest, he wasn’t THAT good. A Golden Globe maybe, but not an Oscar. No no no.

Christian Bale seems to think a raspy voice makes him sound cool, so whatever. I am lukewarm on him. I decided to tape the other movies off TNT to compare what I remember as a kid to reality, and so far I’ve only watched the first two – and Michael Keaton fucking rocks. The film was also a little two long – 2.5 hours is a long time, even though there was so much packed in. I think they could have taken out all the stuff about Two Face (lol the guy from Thank you for Smoking) and it would have been a decent length. I also don’t really like Maggie Gyllenhaal.. I guess they tried to find someone who looked even more like a hounddog than Katie Holmes, and they were successful.

But I promise, I really liked it. I am glad that the two Jokers are so different they can’t really be compared, because I don’t think anyone should. Jack Nicholson was priceless, but so was Ledger’s performance. Just not Oscar-worthy. Seriously.
We also saw Weird Al in Columbus last night, who was amazing as usual. I will post pictures when I get them off my phone. Hurrah!!
