The Hunger Games
I love tween book series. Back in the day it was Babysitter’s Club (which was awesome) and Sweet Valley, and now it’s Twilight and Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. In case you’ve never heard of it, the trilogy is written by Suzanne Collins (extremely scary looking lady in her 40s) and it’s awesome. To be fair, I’ve only read the first in the series, so maybe it starts to suck, but they are wicked popular. The final book came out at the end of August and they’re already talking about making films! Yay!
In the first book, the main character is Katniss (lots of dumb names in this book), who lives in post apocalyptic North America. All of North America was separated into thirteen districts with “The Capitol” which is like Big Brother, controlling everything. There was an uprising and The Capitol pwned everyone and even obliterated District 13. So now there are twelve districts, and as a constant reminder that The Capitol owns their asses, they established The Hunger Games. Each person from the ages of 12-18 enter into a kind of raffle, and each year your name is put in an extra time (once when you’re 12, twice when you’re 13, etc). Now, as added fun, you can have your name entered in additional times for food and grain and that sort of thing. Smart move by The Capitol because it means the poorest people have the biggest chance to get picked, because you totally don’t want the rich kids in there. Anyway, Katniss’ sister gets picked and she volunteers to take her place. So they pick one boy and one girl from each district and they all go to an arena that is run by The Capitol and, wait for it, fight to the death. It’s awesome. And they also show it live on TV. It’s basically like the movie The Condemned except they’re kids instead of felons and Stone Cold Steve Austin isn’t in it. Otherwise, for real, it’s exactly the same. you should read it. They are fast reads and are super awesome. I am v excited to start the second book! Hooray!
