Richard Alpert

The problem with high expectations is that you’re almost always disappointed. Take Richard Alpert’s episode this past Tuesday on LOST. They acted like it was this huge reveal that he came over on the Black Rock. We knew that already, whether they had expressly said it or not. We also knew that he can’t die, blah blah blah. What was kind of cool was that it was the smoke monster who saved Richard, and maybe even brought him back to life. That was different. I think they’re trying to get me to question if the smoke monster is bad or good, if Jacob is good or evil. And I was over the moon when they suggested the island might be hell. As someone who is still clinging to purgatory, that was pretty neat. I’m sure it isn’t, and it will be something shitty.

Mostly, the episode just made me sad. Sad for Richard and his crappy life. But I don’t really feel like I learned anything new that I hadn’t already figured out on my own, you know? It’s like they rotate between a terrible episode and an awesome one. I just wish during the terrible ones that they would at least give me something new to think about for the week. But they don’t. To be fair, this season is WAY BETTER than seasons four and five, so at least I’m thankful for that.
