The Ides of March

What started out like an awesome Aaron Sorkin-y political film quickly devolved into Primary Colors in present day. George Clooney played a Democratic candidate in the Ohio primary and his campaign was run by Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Ryan Gosling. It was good, don't get me wrong. The writing was solid - funny where needed, poignant where necessary. But it was too short and never delved into the political process at all - it became a story about what happens when Gosling finds out Clooney got an intern pregnant. That was pretty much the summary of the film. The best things about the film were Hoffman and Paul Giamatti, who is always a genius. The greatest line was when Gosling confronted Clooney about the affair, telling him that he broke the number one rule in politics, "You can lie, you can cheat, you can start a war, you can bankrupt the country. But you can't fuck the intern." Good stuff. Funny and also true. Gosling's character was difficult to portray bec...

2012

It's about a half-hour until 2012 - very cool. I have decided that my goal for 2012 is to read at least 52 books. I have a few all ready to go, including Ellen's newest book, Tina Fey's memoir, and the Game of Thrones books by George R.R. Martin. I am definitely ready to get started. As far as movies, I have been seriously slacking off. The only one I watched so far was Crazy, Stupid, Love and it was meh. Anyway, I will watch more, I promise. Happy 2012!

Golden Globes!!!

It's that time of year again... that's right, award show season. The Golden Globes nominations came out and, unfortunately, I have only seen one nominated movie, Bridesmaids . I have ten in queue ready to watch, but I have yet to start. I hope there are some gems this year. As far as the television nominations, most of the dramas nominated are on channels I don't get (HBO, SHO, etc), so that sucks, and comedies are just bad nowadays, so those are out too. I have decided to focus on the movies instead, because they are more fun anyway. As usual, I will post reviews (my reviews, not real reviews) of each film as I see them and make predictions based on what I think. I used to also include what will win besides what I think will win, but I'm over that. Who cares what will actually win? It's hardly ever the thing that should win, and dumb Hollywood politics are always involved. I no longer care about my batting average on predicting winners, and instead I am choosing t...

Terra Nova...

...is an awesome show. It's a new show this fall on FOX, which is scary to think about in the first place. FOX isn't usually that reliable when it comes to programming, but then again, they did have 24. Terra Nova is like LOST meets Jurassic Park . Here's a brief overview: There is a family on Earth that illegally had another child. The law is that families are restrictred to two parents and two children to avoid overpopulation. The planet is also suffering from serious envrinomental problems. Cue Avatar and Fern Gully. Anyway, the family is found out and the dad goes to jail. The actor is from something, but I and IMDB couldn't figure out what I know him from. Anyway, the wife is a doctor, or scientist, or something, and she gets a shot at going to Terra Nova, which isn't really a place and is more back in time. The quickly explain away how the Butterfly Effect doesn't apply, but I will have to watch the episode again to understand better - something about pa...

9/11

Personally, I find it extremely annoying when 9/11 comes around, yet again, and everyone starts talking about where they were and how it changed all of our lives forever. Whatever. I don't need to see the footage of the planes coming down 700 times to remember what happened. I remember it fine. And it didn't really change anything, it was just a tragedy. People like to pretend things that happened in their lives are more important than they actually are. But then I started thinking about it, and I think that 9/11 really did change my life. True, we probably would've gotten involved in a Middle East war regardless, but it definitely was the kick start. I enlisted in the Army on 7/15/2001, just two months before 9/11. My military career was supposed to be about one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer, free college, and that's about it. It was about the college money for me, and about the fact that both my parents were in the Army, and my grandfathers too. But most...

The Firm

I have recently started reading some John Grisham, and finished reading and watching The Firm . One thing is interesting to me... In the book, the main character cheats on his wife and the firm tries to blackmail him but he works out a situation where he gets away with $8 million at the end and his wife never finds out. However, in the movie, he comes clean with his wife and there's a huge fight. It seemed like such a small detail to me at first, but then I started thinking about it. Plot devices are one thing, but there's plenty of plot to go around with the book, so why? I think it's because it's more palatable for the public to see that you can't get away with stuff like that. Unfortunately, that's what happened in the book, and if you're willing to believe he got away with the money at the end, it would make sense that he could get away with something as small as cheating on his wife. But I bet it was because of the crazy sensibility of the public. Surpr...

Cheers

Again, I will say it. I love the Netflix instant queue. Netflix inflated their prices like crazy recently, but I don't think I will ever be able to give up the instant queue. As long as I have the internet (and something other than a netbook), I can watch awesome movies and awesome shows whenever I want. And I do, trust me. I am currently in the middle of Star Trek: TNG , Cheers , and Star Trek: Voyager. I also finished watching the first season of Switched at Birth . The movies on Netflix are... okay. But the tv shows are really where the awesomeness comes in. They recently added all of the former seasons of Mad Men , and I'm definitely looking forward to watching those again soon. Anyway, the reason I wanted to blog today is because of Cheers . Like everyone, I've seen a few random episodes of the show, but never seriously. It started in 1982, and I wasn't born yet, so it's not that surprising. And when I was a kid, Nick at Nite had I Love Lucy and Bewitched....
