The Oscars 2012

I am very happy that the nominees for the Oscars this year are different from the Golden Globes nominees. Of course, there are overlaps, but I think it's a good thing. So far I have been disappointed with the films I've seen. I watched Moneyball yesterday and... I don't even have anything to say about it. It was fine - nothing special. I hope that changes as I watch more films. I am especially excited about The Artist because it's something so different and unique. Most of the nominated movies are ones I haven't even heard of - which is fun because I don't know what to expect. I am happy to see The Ides of March is not heavily nominated - this gives me hope because that movie... well... it sucked. Let's keep it real.

First of all, I want to mention that I don't care about a lot of the categories. Some, like editing and art direction are really hard to guess because I don't know enough about it. I will stick to the major acting awards, best picture, screenplay, foreign (if i make it through them all), and animated films. I also will not guess best director, mostly because I assume it's going to be Woody Allen or Scorsese, and mostly because I have no idea if the director was any good when I watch a movie. I want to say art direction because Harry Potter is nominated, but I don't know what makes good art direction - either way I vote for Harry Potter because movies like that NEVER get nominated for anything and I want them to win something. I feel the same about visual effects. The nominees are Harry Potter, Hugo, Real Steel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers. This category should be called action movies - they never get nominated for anything else. Again, my vote is Harry Potter, but maybe Rise of the Planet of the Apes because the effects were truly amazing. It's a toss up on that one. I just hope it isn't Transformers.

Like always, there is no reason for me to discuss the musical scores, because my vote will always and forever be for John Williams. He is nominated twice in the same category and I will be forever sad if he loses. Unfortunately, The Artist is nominated in this category, and it was a silent film - so come on. It's going to win, probably. But I will hold out hope for John Williams because he is amazing.
